A tragic aviation accident in Rio Grande do Sul claimed four lives after a small passenger aircraft crashed into a restaurant near an airport on Saturday morning. According to reports, the pilot and three passengers on board the light aircraft died in the crash, which occurred shortly after 10:30 am local time near Capão da Canoa Airport.
The aircraft, identified as a Piper Malibu, was reportedly approaching the airport when it lost control, struck a pole near the runway, and crashed into a restaurant located in a residential area. The impact triggered a massive fire, with thick black smoke seen rising from the building shortly after the collision.
According to reports, the restaurant and an adjacent shop were closed at the time of the incident, preventing casualties on the ground. Eyewitness accounts suggest that at least two individuals narrowly escaped as the aircraft descended rapidly before crashing. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, containing the fire and securing the surrounding area.
Authorities, including civil defence teams and firefighters, evacuated nearby residents as a precautionary measure. Local officials confirmed that surrounding properties sustained some damage but no additional injuries were reported. The swift response helped prevent further casualties in the densely populated area.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the crash. According to reports, forensic teams are examining the wreckage and gathering eyewitness statements to establish the sequence of events leading up to the accident. The incident comes amid heightened concerns over aviation safety following a similar crash reported in Mexico a day earlier.
